The pains we go through getting to our destinations……

Have you ever had that feeling where you are so excited to get going on holiday but there is this slight trepidation sitting at the back of your head reminding you of the way your body LOVES to seize up after/during a long drive…

Lower backs, upper backs, neck and shoulder are the number one areas to give us hell for sitting for so long.

More than often the problem starts before you have even got into your car!  I know from personal experience that the running around we do before heading off on our adventure, rushing here and there, packing, picking up heavy bags (you know you shouldn’t but there is no one to help…) and chasing after your over excited kids! This can start the back pain in motion.

There are a few tricks up my sleeve to help you ease the pain or even help stop it from creeping up on you.

  • If you HAVE to pick that bag up PLEASE bend your knees right down and tighten up your abs and gluts (bum) to pick it up. This way you use the correct muscles and not your poor spine to do the work.
  • Keep those shoulder rolls going through your journey, remember back wards NOT forwards. The tops of your shoulders should try and graze your earlobes. This can help stop those top shoulder muscles (Trapezius) from going into spasm.
  • Neck rolls at traffic lights or when you stop for those all-important pee stops! Remember NOT to let your head hang backwards, only forwards and side to side.
  • Shoulder stretches are all important at your stops to help release them not spasm up.

  • Lower backs…. The all nasty back pain that can refer down your legs. What you need to do every time you stop is give those hip flexors a good old stretch. As you can see from the clip you can simply do them standing so you don’t look like a complete weirdo!
The Glut Med (side of your hip/bum muscle) is an easy one to keep happy in the car, that is if you are the passenger! Try the knee to opposite shoulder stretch as shown.

  • And last but not least if it is lower back pain you suffer from pop a little cushion behind your lower back and make sure your hips are slightly higher than your knees. Sit on a cushion if you need to.

Try all these and hopefully it will give you some release.
